Rukouspalvelukseen osallistuivat Tasavallan Presidentti Tarja Halonen puolisonsa tohtori Pentti Arajärven kanssa, Korkeasti Pyhitetty Karjalan ja koko Suomen arkkipiispa Leo, joukko diplomaatteja ja seurakunta. 

Seurakunnan lahjana Tasavallan Presidentille luovutettiin jouluikoni.

Tasavallan Presidentti on virkakautensa aikana osallistunut vuosittain tähän palvelukseen, kuten tänäkin vuonna.

Metropoliitta Ambrosius piti rukouspalveluksen päätteeksi puheen:

Maamme kansallispäivä on kiitollisuuden ja ilon päivä. Jumalan avulla olemme saaneet jo pitkään rauhassa rakentaa maatamme, tehdä työtä suomalaisen elämänmuodon ja kulttuurin hyväksi. Vähitellen olemme kasvamassa keskinäiseen yhteyteen ja jakamiseen myös yli kansallisten rajojen.

We express our gratitude to God for this country, our national culture and today particularly for the opportunities to share this heritage in a European and a global context.

Today political and economic uncertainties and turbulence in wider environment in Europe, and for example in the Middle East, touch all of us in a profound way. Our trust in the future is being tested, and we often keep asking what are and will be the foundations of our hope.

During this season of the Advent we are looking forward to the great feast of Christmas. It is not meant to be only the celebration of the birth of a child into the manger of Bethlehem.

The miracle of Christmas will give a lasting perspective to our contemporary spiritual and ethical search for the purpose of life and a path forward.

The key word to the mystery of Christmas is philanthropy. God became a human being in Jesus Christ because of philanthropy, which means love for humankind. Through this He gives a deeper meaning to our existence, to our pursuits. He shared our destiny, including our suffering and sacrifice. By doing this the Lord showed us all an example, a model of solidarity and universal love which passes all manmade borders, prejudices and exclusiveness.

Through this worship we express our particular gratitude to you, President of the Republic of Finland. During your term of office you have shared in the philanthropy of God through your commitment and active pursuits for the wellbeing of all humanity, and particularly for that of the marginalized and of those who suffer in our societies. This way you have given us a worthy example to follow.

Kunnioitettu Tasavallan Presidentti. Te olette nykyisessä tehtävässänne viimeistä kertaa läsnä tässä rukouspalveluksessa. Siksi lausumme Teille lämpimän kiitoksen sitoutuneesta työstänne yhteiseksi hyväksi, meidän hyväksemme. Olette etujoukossa antanut meille esimerkin filantropiasta, joka ylittää inhimilliset raja-aidat ja ennakkoluulot. Olette asettunut ihmisen puolelle silloinkin, kun se toisinaan on tuonut mukaansa väärinymmärrystä, kritiikkiä ja kärsimystä.

Finally – as we know – Christian faith does not mean an easy life, but a life full of meaning. Human uniqueness and dignity have their roots in the soil of contemplation and become visible at times of celebration, even in the face of danger, terror and death. The celebration of the Day of Independence grants us this joy, gratitude and equally a call for perpetual commitment to this philanthropy, and to the action that follows from it.
